A New Career Trend: Hypenated Professional Identities for Indian-Americas |
e are already living our lives as a hyphenated ethnic class in the modern world. As Indian-Americans both born in the U.S. or in India, we learn to blend our cultural roots and heritage from the East with the West early on. An adaptable group by nature, we are now adopting concurrent career paths as well or changing careers later in life. People choose to pursue multiple careers for a variety of reasons including economic (for supplementary income or because of poverty), educational (multiple degrees), and personal (dissatisfaction in one career or fulfillment of creative interests). With these emerging career trends and new ideology, our generation no longer needs to follow the dogmas passed down from our grandparents: "You must choose arts or science." I myself represent a unique career hybrid of arts and science as a Chemistry Professor and a Wedding and Event Coordinator. I will share my experiences in the evolution of my dichotomous career as well as musings about this new career trend. |

The NetIP North America Annual Conference will be held in Seattle from August 20th to August 22nd. Here are some more details on this year's theme:
Unique by Nature.
We're unique, you know. As South Asian professionals living in North America, we have so much more in common than we realize or appreciate. The NetIP Annual Conference is an occasion that brings us together once a year in a meaningful way to celebrate these very bonds of common heritage.
We spend three days:
- Exploring and learning at Keynotes, Panel Sessions, and Skill Workshops
- Mingling with successful leaders, CEOs, and celebrities
- Creating a community with our peers: the future leaders of North America
- Dancing the night away at evening mixers
And, of course, we might as well have a bit of fun while we're at it! Be ready for an event that will leave you feeling intrigued, inspired, and dreaming big!
